Gates closed = Single Track Dirt Trails Closed

Hey folks!

This is a tough time of year for the single track dirt trails due to the weather.  Typically we see the most trail damage done at this time of the year just because some folks don't understand that using damp and muddy trails is not OK.  Just because it is 60F in December doesn't mean that the trails are ready to ride/hike/run.  If you see these wooden gates near the trail head closed that means that ALL of the single track dirt trails are closed (they now have "SINGLETRACK TRAILS CLOSED" signs on them too).  If you are using the asphalt trails and happen to run into folks using the single track when these gates are closed, please give them a friendly reminder that all the single track is closed due to poor trail conditions.

The most typical times that are OK to use the trails at this time of year is early in the morning when it is well below freezing.  Generally the trails will thaw in a few hours after sun rise.  It is very common for the air temperature to be 20F, but with the sun shining on the black dirt the trails will thaw and become muddy and unusable.  It's up to every user to be aware of the changing conditions and only use the trail system when the conditions allow.

Also, please note the big "TRAILS OPEN" sign near the bulletin boards at the trailhead are for the paved trails only.  The gates and signs mentioned in the previous paragraph and pictured below are the control points for the singletrack.

This information can be found via a twitter feed on the Earn Your Dirt website as well.

With everyone's help we can all work on keeping our trails systems in tip top shape through the winter and spring.

Successful workday

Wow!  What a great day and huge turn out.  We had 28 hard working folks show up and take care of business.  All the goals set for the day were completed.  This means that we will be able to concentrate on the  build out of new trail the rest of the building season. There are a few more maintenance items, but a big chunk was knocked out this weekend.

Managed Deer Hunt 11/17-11/18 **TRAILS CLOSED**

Twice each year during the fall/winter season the Corp of Engineers closes the Mountain Biking, hiking and paved trails to conduct a managed deer hunt.

From the COE's website:

"The managed deer hunt is held each year during the last weekend of the fall firearms deer season. This year’s event will be held on November 17-18, 2012. The hunt is designed to provide a deer hunting opportunity for persons with permanent mobility impairments, with priority given to persons confined to wheelchairs. The hunt is fully catered with volunteers provided to assist the hunters in all aspects of the hunt, from transportation to field dressing.

The hunt is a very high quality hunting experience with great emphasis placed on safety, comfort and good hunting opportunity. There is no charge for the hunt, except all hunters must purchase a managed deer hunt tag.

Anyone interested in hunting or volunteering to assist a hunter should call the Smithville Lake Project Office at 816-532-0174 or E-mail our office at "

The dates of the second closing will be posted as the dates approach.

Specialized Demos Days Coming to Smithville Trails

The first official day of Summer kicks off on June 20th, so we here at Epic Bike and Sport figured we'd kick start Summer 2012 off right and bring out a big truck full of all of Specialized's fun toys to play on. So on Wednesday, June 20th from 2-7, we're coming to Sailboat cove with the Specialized Demo truck with all kinds of goodies to get you giddy like a kid on Christmas.

If you've been thinking about a new bike, come on out. If you haven't, come on out. If you just like riding other people's sweet and expensive bikes, come on out. They'll have a good selection of all the bikes from Epics to Stumpy HT's for the boys, and Fate and Safires for the ladies. Lots of Sworks too, so you can ride the best of the best from the Specialized lineup.

If you haven't come out to a demo day before, basically you show up, sign a waiver, give them id and credit card, then go and ride whatever bike you wish. That whole credit card thing is just in case you love the bike so much you decide to rail T-N-T out the back way and never come back. These bikes will sometimes make you do such craziness.

Hope we can see you out!

Noticing More Raccoon Lately?

Seems its about this time of year that the canine distemper hits the raccoon population, so be aware that a raccoon siting during the day might mean a sick (dangerous) animal.

As of this past weekend, I encountered at least one carcass on the trails and spotted two more live raccoon "wandering" on a paved trail during daylight hours.

Keep your distance and keep your dogs clear of them too, as an unvaccinated dog is susceptible to this deadly disease.

Ol' Grandad

The Ol’ Grandad reroute is open, complete and ready for your riding, running or hiking pleasure. Today we finished up the southern section of OGD (the old Olive Garden area) and a short reroute of WTT extending it a little further North.  This moved Intersection 15 (OGD/WTT) a hundred or so yards North of where it once was.  We also did a little repair work to the forked tree on the Pulpit Trail.

Today's Crew:

Mark Ruehter
Steve Rice
Tim King
Rich Bowman
Seth Bowman
Grayson Bowman
Kelly Peitzman
Neale Shour

Thanks guys for getting it finished up!

Many or most of the SMV crew at some point has worked on this major reroute and I'm thankful to all of you.

You guys are the best crew in town!!

Route W Bridge Repairs Begin Soon at Smithville Lake

Repairs prompt bridge closure
CLAY COUNTY, Mo - The Missouri Department of Transportation is preparing for bridge repairs on the Route W bridges over the Smithville Lake Reservoir beginning Friday, April 13. These bridges will receive needed structural repairs requiring restrictions to traffic in the area.
The Route W Bridge near Little Platte Park will be reduced to one lane beginning Friday, April 13, to allow crews to safely conduct joint repairs on the deck of the bridge. A temporary traffic signal will be used to move motorists safely across the structure, and access to the boat ramp will be maintained during the bridge work.
The Route W Bridge at Owl Creek Arm will undergo extensive substructure repair at the expansion bent of the bridge, requiring complete road closure. Beginning Monday, April 23, crews will close Route W between Route C and Route J. Although the road will be closed, local traffic will have continued access up to the bridge. Traffic will be detoured using Routes C and J to bypass the bridge closure. Work on the bridges will be done consecutively and is weather dependent. All work is scheduled for completion by the end of May in time for Memorial Day weekend.
For more information about projects in your area, please visit MoDOT's website For instant updates, follow MoDOT_KC on Twitter or send questions and comments to We want your feedback on our work zones! Rate Our Work Zones
