Winter Riding Tips!

Please be aware of ever constantly changing conditions of the trails during the winter months. Often times the trail surface will be frozen and solid in the morning but thawed and wet during the afternoon. Also the trails can be frozen in the shaded areas, but muddy on south facing slopes or areas the direct sunlight reaches. Please note that if you are leaving tracks on the trails while hiking or riding or there is mud on your shoes or bike, then you are doing damage to the trail.

Sometimes it's best to just turn around and call it a day, as damage to the trail is very difficult to repair and all of the singletrack at Smithville is maintained by volunteers not the Land Manager.

Thank you for your help!

For more information on trail building, maintenance and etiquette please visit Earth Riders Trail Association's (ERTA) website!

Just a reminder that the paved and dirt trails will be  closed this weekend.

Twice each year during the fall/winter season the Corp of Engineers closes the Mountain Biking, hiking and paved trails to conduct a managed deer hunt.

From the COE's website:

"The managed deer hunt is held each year during the last weekend of the fall firearms deer season. This year’s event will be held on November 19-20, 2011. The hunt is designed to provide a deer hunting opportunity for persons with permanent mobility impairments, with priority given to persons confined to wheelchairs. The hunt is fully catered with volunteers provided to assist the hunters in all aspects of the hunt, from transportation to field dressing.

The hunt is a very high quality hunting experience with great emphasis placed on safety, comfort and good hunting opportunity. There is no charge for the hunt, except all hunters must purchase a managed deer hunt tag.

Anyone interested in hunting or volunteering to assist a hunter should call the Smithville Lake Project Office at 816-532-0174 or E-mail our office at "

The dates of the second closing will be posted as the dates approach.

Great ERTA Workday - Thanks Everyone!

We had excellent weather and a turn out of about 12 trail volunteers for our first official workday this fall.  Nothing starts a workday off like a box of Ray's Donuts.  Thanks Aaron!

With dry conditions the choices of items to work on were limited.  The rain earlier in the week helped to make the ground a little more pliable to work with, but it was still pretty hard.  The areas that were chosen to work on have been problem areas, but major undertakings to fix correctly due to the size of the materials needed to make the fixes work.  Half the group took on the walnut log feature on Lakeside Speedway affectionately known as "Shish Ka Bob's Log".  The other half fixed the "Pulpit" stairs.

Pulpit log improvement

The finished product on Lakeside. The work crew gives it a thumbs up approval since the old crossing cost TW a few pins in his thumb earlier this summer.

Part of the Pulpit crew putting the final touches on the keystone in the stair rebuild.

Both of these locations have been sites of trail vandalism.  In fact the log on Lakeside had been moved off the trail again on Saturday evening or Sunday morning just before the workday. We have made the request many times for trail users to either ride the feature that is on the designated single track or get off their bikes and walk over them.  We are hoping that the enhanced and improved features will be enjoyed by all and not be compromised by trail vandals.

Remember that all ERTA trails are built and maintained by a 100% volunteer effort.  Thanks again to all the volunteers that came out to give back to the trails that we enjoy all year.

Deer Hunting (Bow)

From one of the SMV crew....

I'm not sure if any of you are aware of this or not but there is an open archery season in some of the areas that we ride. There was a special drawing for these spots. The attached map shows the units that impact our trails. I did not see that there were any signs posted at the trail head. I thought it was odd that the T-N-T gate was closed on Sunday morning. I suspect that the guy hunting that unit took it upon himself to attempt to close the trail.

FYI... the Smoke and Davey TH is just to the west (left) of this image. These areas include TNT and Happy Jack trails.

Be safe out there!

Vandalism Hits Our Trails

At least three acts of vandalism have hit our trails! There is a good chance that all are unrelated, but that is just speculation.

1) On the singletrack trail section known as Lakeside Speedway a large log crossing was removed. Authorized volunteers returned it to it's place and it was moved again. This was not just a small log, but rather a very large log (took 3 adult men to move it back) with smaller logs on either side that were wired in place to the larger center log.

2) Numerous medium to large rocks were dugout and remove from the trail tread on Lakeside Speedway (our count was over 35) and even more on Neale's trail. These rocks were part of the trail makeup and part of the challenge of riding these trails. Also, their absence will likely create the potential for erosion issues that will have to be addressed by more volunteer hours.

3) The vehicle gates at Smoke and Davey Trailhead were severely damaged Wednesday 7/6 after 10 pm.

If you have any information that can help identify the responsible parties please contact the County Rangers at 816-407-3400.

As a reminder, the singletrack (dirt trails) are 100 percent built and maintained by a well-organized and structured volunteer team under the direction and authority of Clay County Parks and unauthorized trail work and/or modifications is strictly PROHIBITED!

Thanks to the wonderful folks at Clay County Parks, we now have gates at three singletrack entrances! The goal is to have a more permanent and official trail closure system/mechanism for those times when the trails are too muddy for traffic. We are working on getting signage ("trail closed") for each location as well. The three locations are the the Northside Loop entrance at the Smoke and Davey TH, the Lakeside entrance at the Smoke and Davey TH and the Soutside Loop entrance at the Sailboat Cove TH.

Another Great Workday!

With the exception of Justin and me hurting ourselves, I’d say that was another great workday! For those of you that couldn't make it out, the Paradise Alley reroute is opened up and ready for your riding, hiking or running pleasure. We also closed off the old section of trail. This included the planting of several cedars and removing the pipe and rock (for future projects) from the old creek crossing.

We also built a 16' “elevated walkway” over a fairly deep ravine. All of the lumber for the project was donated! The telephone poles and some of the decking was donated by the Army Corps of Engineers but most of the decking came from Stan Gaskill. So if you see him out on the trail, make sure you thank him!

I really think the new section is going to be fun and hope to see you on the trails soon!

Workday - Saturday March 19 8:30 - 12:30

The SMV Trail Crew will be having a workday this Saturday.

When: Saturday March 19
Time: 8:30 - 12:30
Where: Hwy W (Smoke N Davey Trailhead) just west of Paradise, MO
What kind of work: We have an unplanned re-route due to some field work that was done over the winter. We had planned on eventually re-routing this piece anyway. They just moved up our time line on it. We will be cutting in a new piece of trail from the SE side of Creepy Hollow on Happy Jack straight south to the new re-route we put in last fall. Our hope is that it will turn out a little bit like Kessel's run out in Fruita.

What to wear: Work clothes, boots, and hand protection. Hydration pack is usually a great idea as well as a snack.
Tools: We should have enough tools to go around if you don't have your own trail tools.

C U out there!
